FIC: Wax | Broken | Torture (Turn-of-the-Century Toughs; original gen/slash)
These stories are written in response to the 50 Darkfics challenge, which offers one hundred one-word prompts on dark themes, to inspire authors to write stories on those topics. The darkfic written for this challenge ranges from lightly humorous to suspensefully dramatic. All of the stories here are set in the Midcoast nations of the Turn-of-the-Century Toughs universe. Turn-of-the-Century Toughs is my cycle of historical fantasy series about disreputable men on the margins of society, and the men and women who love them. The novels are set in an imaginary version of Maryland and other Mid-Atlantic states between the 1880s and the 1910s. One of the series in the cycle, Waterman, combines elements of the 1910s with retrofuturistic imagery from the 1960s.

FIC: The Unanswered Question (The Eternal Dungeon; original fiction)
Title: The Unanswered Question.
Author: Dusk Peterson.
Where to find me: Website, Dreamwidth blog, InsaneJournal mirror blog, LiveJournal mirror blog, duskpetersonbooks (e-mail list with announcements of my fiction).
Series: The Eternal Dungeon, a historical fantasy series set in a land where the psychologists wield whips. You don't need to have read the rest of the series to understand this story.
Categories: Original fiction. Male/male platonic feelings (main plot) and male/male erotic attraction (subplots). Mentor fiction and prisoner fiction.
Note: This is my 2009 holiday gift story to my readers. You can see the prompts from my readers that inspired the novella and my response to their prompts (both with major spoilers, so they're best read after you've finished the story).
Rating: PG-13.
Warnings.
Feedback: Yes, please.
Summary: No weapons, no allies, and no guarantees that he will survive the test.

He was weaponless. Or rather, not quite weaponless, for he knew what he was capable of doing with his body, but he bore no blade, nor any whip, nor any lead pipe with which to stun his victim, nor any rope with which to strangle the victim . . . The number of potential weapons he had deliberately laid aside was frighteningly high.

Newbie post
Hi, I just joined this community and thought I'd post something:-) I don't tend to write stuff that focuses on BL, but it does get into my fiction. Here are some random thoughts on what I've been working on...

The Hour before Morning (science fiction/science fantasy) is about 3 people in a prison cell together, 2 men and 1 woman. It starts out with the men and the woman comes in later. The men are not sexually/romantically involved in an explicit way, but they kind of are in a metaphorical way. They have a telepathic bond that produces uncomfortable mental intimacy and sometimes verges on rape metaphors. My friend, who is very into slash and "slashy" texts, really liked this story when it was just about the 2 guys but was disappointed when the woman came in and one of the guys fell for her. She felt like, "There's the old heteronormative context again." I've thought about this a lot though, and I think the introduction of the woman is actually necessary to the development of the relationship between the men. Without her, they'd just go on being sort of close but sort of uncomfortable with each other. But with her, the tension over their telepathic bond gets heightened because the one doesn't like the other "spying" on his feelings for her.

I feel like--in a "genre" sense--the whole issue is a bit thorny. I don't want the female character to be a conventional love interest or just a prop for the men's relationship. I am also a little uncomfortable with the idea that the "woman" necessarily sabotages a nice story about 2 men. On the other hand, I don't want to sabotage an interesting, unusual dynamic between two men by introducing a woman who shifts the focus off that relationship and onto conventional "romance." I'm babbling, but your thoughts are welcome.

getting two people together is the hardest part about writing i find! Right now im writing a prequel short story (prequel to another short story that's due out soon) about a mortal boy and a faerie boy who meet, fall in love and run off together.

Problem is getting them together! It's really hard to generate an entire relationship beginning into a short space of time. They have to meet, fall in love, or at least, start to, and kiss, within a short space of time and that doesn't happen ion real life unless they're both drunk :)

added to that, it's very easily to fall into the cliche trap. one of my characters is wounded, so im trying to avoid the, stay with me, i dont' want to be alone, cliche, taht would get them together, but be so cheesy! it's just very difficult to do, especially to make it believable

not that this is a gay fiction alone problem, but i think it's a bigger problem with gay fiction because you have the hurdle of them both being the same gender. at least with straight couples you can ahve them fancy each other, you have less of a chance of one hitting the other for making an unwarranted move. but with gay couples, especially virgin, new to realising they're gay, couples, it's harder to give them the reason to make that first move.

so grr to it! :)
